The Irish Network Japan (INJ), founded in 1987, has played a key role in bringing Irish traditions to Japan. They organized Tokyo’s first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1992, starting with just 60 participants. Today, Tokyo boasts one of Asia’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parades, attracting thousands of spectators and participants each year. St. Patrick’s Day in Tokyo is celebrated every year with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade that takes place along Omotesandō Avenue. What happens? The first part of the festival is an Irish cultural festival in Yoyogi Park’s Event Square on the weekend. For those unfamiliar with the holiday, St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. Not limited to the Irish, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in countries across the world, and people of various nationalities can be seen wearing green, Ireland’s national color each year on March 17. In Tokyo, the 30th St. Patrick’s Day Parade will wind its way down Omotesando Avenue with its usual bright and engaging groups in front of thousands of spectators, on Sunday 16th March from 1pm. This popular parade is the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in Asia and just one of many celebrations taking place this year across The theme of this year’s parade is “The Fusion of Tradition & Innovation,” the same as the Green Ireland Festival. Although the parade has been canceled a total of four times due to the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022, the theme was chosen in hopes of further development, building on the various bonds of friendship between Japan and Ireland Green Ireland Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Parade. St. Patrick’s Day in Tokyo is celebrated every year with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade that takes place along Omotesandō Avenue. It will include traditional music and, of course, Irish dancing performances, plus a gourmet booth where you can try Irish whisky and more. Irish Network Japan (INJ) and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Tokyo Executive Committee will hold the “28th St. Patrick’s Day Parade Tokyo” for the first time in four years from 13:00 on Sunday, March 12, 2023. The 19th St. Patrick’s Day Parade is taking place again along the 600-meter Motomachi shopping street in Yokohama on Saturday. People are encouraged to dress up in green and celebrate Ireland’s national holiday. Tokyo St. Patrick’s Day Parade. You can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day without a parade! This year, the flagship parade will take place on Omotesando (a 3-lane avenue in Tokyo) at 1-2 PM on March 20th. St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in Ireland for nearly 1,200 years, and in the United States for more than 260 years, with the most famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade on New York’s 5th Avenue. Japan’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Tokyo in 1992. Schedule of St. Patrick’s Day Events in Japan 2024 The largest by far is the Tokyo St. Patrick's Day Parade in Omotesando with 15,000 participants and 50,000 spectators. The event features marching bands, cheerleaders and plenty of enthusiastic supporters.
